The reference for this painting is of an old tree snag on the 5040 hike on Vancouver Island.   Dead trees in forests take on a new life of their own, as they have a unique presence and sometimes start looking like ghosts or figures.  Fungi love them and their rotting wood also becomes a desired habitat for animals and birds.  For an artist they also feed the imagination!
